GSA Stairwell Photoluminescent Project

GSA Building safety project using Photo-luminescent tape to illuminate during the power outage. Federal government building's new upgrade by Dakota Intertek Corp.

This project is a benchmark prototype of a soon-to-be nationwide Federal Building standard. Photoluminescent (glow in the dark) products are being used in the stairwells of three Federal buildings in downtown Chicago. The GSA fire and life/safety group are the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction).

The purpose of this project is that in the event of an emergency and power outage, the photoluminescent products embedded in the new rubber stair tread nosing, as well as the tape installed on all handrails and at the perimeter of all the landings, can safely guide the building occupants down the stairs.

The process involved completely grinding down every square inch of the existing stairwell substrate and putting a cementitious skim coat down for a new bonding surface. The landing tiles and stair treads were installed next with heavy adhesive for bonding. Last came the tape installation along with the addition of new glow in the dark signage on all of the floor levels.
